After the closing of the workshop when we are waiting for transport back to Arawa, Thomas Tamusio a Chief from the village was telling the participants that all the stones they were seeing at the village were not from there but was carried down the river by the big landside when they were digging the road up to Panguna which buried couple workmen and machineries.
After he finished his story I asked him if I could film him which he says ok and I did further asked him what his thoughts about reopening Panguna mine. He told me his answer is big NO, but he wants BCL to clean up the mess. The land is for gardening not mining he says, population is multiplying where will the children live and make garden up there as well as us if mining further destroys the land.

“The land is for gardening, not mining.” Thank you Chief Thomas Tamusio. When the rest of the world thinks like that, they won’t want what is under the ground in Mekamui anymore. Is there any need to compete with the outside in the global economic pyramid scheme? So much of the earth has been destroyed by logging, mining, ranching, agriculture, industrialism, and cities; Mekamui still has what the colonized western civilizations have squandered. Your island has wealth beyond money that I would imagine only comes with protecting it with local protocol. You are world leaders at this time of the 6th Mass Extinction.
