I worked in Moresby from 86 to 91, losing a full drum of cyanide concentrate off the supply barge on the Fly River was one of the more haunting recollections I have of the attitude of the mining company to the rape of the environment and the greedy haste to plunder and get out.
Did the barge stop?
It didn’t even slow down.. that drum is still there, how many others are time bombs rusting away?
Well, Aussies will find out one day soon, the Fly River empties into the gulf.. the gulf stream reaches the Northern Australian coast before it flows on, the dead marine life should be enough to warrant some belated outrage by our politicians, who surely cannot be so ignorant to the history of the mine’s operations.
